If God believes in democracy, why did she invent Democrats?
Anyhow, as Europe slumbers, the Americans will be caught up in the dramas of the mid-term elections. With no hint of an outcome as we retire, we have only a general exit poll to rely on, commissioned by Associated Press.
A strong majority - about sixty percent of voters, we are told - disapproved of the war in Iraq. Only a third said the war has improved the long-term security of the United States, down from almost half - 46 percent - in the 2004 national exit poll. Some two-thirds said Iraq was very important to their vote, and they strongly favoured Democratic candidates.
God will have her little jokes. We can only wonder whether AP's polls are any better than its photographs.
