A mandatory qualification?

Mary Ellen Synon writes about Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Is he a violent rapist or just a sleazy French socialist?

Either way, she says, events that occurred at the Sofitel in Times Square last May ought to leave his political career sunk. As columnist Michael Powell wrote in the New York Times at the weekend: "When the debate is between those who accuse you of rape and those who defend you as a mere disgusting cad, your image problems have not emerged from critical care".

The interesting thing is that a criminal conviction does not seem to be a handicap in the French presidential race. In fact, it seems to be a mandatory qualification.
