Santa's giant dustbin

A number of newspapers and websites today remark on the arrival at Felixstowe of the world’s largest container ship, the 170,000-ton MS Emma Maersk, delivering goods made in China in time for Christmas.

Because it is a bearer of gifts, not a few, such as the Independent, make Christmas allusions, such as "Santa's giant helper". But, as Booker records in his column, on its return journey, ships like it will be carrying thousands of tons of waste in lieu of ballast, which will be "recycled" in China.

By this means – and no other - we meet the requirements of the EU's Landfill Directive.
