We don't want your aid

The view of Pranab Mukherjee and other Indian ministers, who tried to terminate British aid to India last year.

But they were told by DFID that British ministers had spent political capital justifying the aid to their electorate, and it would be highly embarrassing if the Indian government pulled the plug. Hence the payments, of approximately £280 million a year, continued.

That leaves us with the situation where we don't want to way the aid, the India government doesn't want to receive it, yet British ministers persist in giving our money away. And that is what passes for democracy.
