Ghost soldiers

Harding writes from the front line. I am reminded, perhaps unkindly, of the comment made by American historian Russel Weigley of the US 9th Division's attack on the Hürtgen in 1944. He said, "An army that depends for superiority on its mobility, firepower and technology should never voluntarily give battle where those assets are at a discount ...".
