So, it's Nicolas Sarkozy with an estimated 53 percent of the vote as against 47 percent for Ségolène Royal, on a huge turnout of 85.5 percent of (French) voters.
He thus becomes the French representative on the European Council, the EU "cabinet" that rules Britain and the other 26 nations of the EU. Oh! And he becomes French president as well.
Meanwhile. his ministers (mostly unelected) will take their places in the Council of Ministers, dictating the majority of laws by which we are bound.
Still, I suppose we get the last laugh. Very soon, we get Gordon Brown as prime minister, and he too will be a fully paid-up member of the European Council.
