These people are thieves

Following on from the story yesterday, the Daily Mail has come up with Charlotte Cane, the former director of resources at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE).

This is one of the quangos that our clever little coalition crud managed to "abolish", simply by merging it into the Design Council. This means Cane lost her job and thereby was given a £225,000 payoff by extremely unwilling taxpayers, equivalent to £11,000 for every month she had held the job. Some 76 people lost their jobs when CABE was scrapped and, in total, their redundancy payouts cost the taxpayer £2.7million.

Killing such people would be illegal, but if someone was actually to do the deed, I suspect that there would be very few tears shed for Charlotte Cane. But, of course, no-one is going to do that, although someone did suggest to me that we need a Dexter.

I wonder if our masters realise how close they are skating to that alternative reality, and how few are our options for achieving change. The Mail says that payoff "led to renewed calls that ministers crack down on waste". But this is not "waste". It is wholesale, cynical raiding of the public purse. Dress it up any way you like, these people are thieves.
